Bosch Smart Home controller: communication standards
The Bosch Smart Home controller currently uses the Zigbee radio standard to communicate with Bosch Smart Home [+M] devices.
Important information:
- Not a Matter controller: The Bosch Smart Home controller does not support the Matter standard.
- No Thread communication: The Bosch Smart Home controller does not use the Thread standard.
- Restrictions for third-party devices: Third-party Matter or Thread devices cannot be connected directly to the Bosch Smart Home controller.
This information helps you to better understand the compatibility of your Bosch Smart Home controller with other devices.
Bosch Smart Home [+M] devices use the Thread radio standard by default. But don't worry if you want to pair the [+M] device with a Bosch Smart Home controller via Zigbee:
- The switch from Thread to Zigbee takes place automatically during pairing, so you do not need to worry about the change. Only Bluetooth must be switched on on your mobile device.
- A switch in the other direction, from Zigbee to Thread, would not have been possible automatically.
In summary: Using Thread as the default offers flexibility and convenience for the Matter system, without any disadvantages for the Bosch Smart Home system.
Using 230V Thread devices:
- Bosch Smart Home [+M] devices that are connected directly to the 230V mains extend the radio network they communicate with.
- These devices act as repeaters and strengthen the Thread network (mesh).
- If you control the [+M] device with a Matter controller via Thread, the Thread range is extended by the Thread network (mesh).
How to extend the range of your Thread network
Place 230V devices strategically:
- Make sure that 230V devices are evenly distributed throughout your home to ensure optimum network coverage.
Update the software:
- Make sure that both your Bosch Smart Home devices and the Matter controller have the latest software.
If your Bosch Smart Home [+M] devices have very high battery consumption, this may be due to the current limitations of Matter 1.1:
No “standby” mode in Matter 1.1:
- Matter 1.1 currently does not support a “standby” mode for devices integrated with a Matter controller.
- This leads to higher battery consumption.
Influence of Bosch Smart Home:
- Bosch Smart Home has no influence on this.

- Make sure that your Bosch Smart Home [+M] device and the Matter controller are compatible. The Matter controller must have an integrated Thread Border Router, or a separate Thread Border Router is required.
- Check the instructions and specifications of both devices.
Update the software:
- Make sure that both your Bosch Smart Home [+M] device and the Matter controller have the latest software.
Contact the manufacturer of the Matter controller:
- The manufacturer of the controller or of the Matter app can provide specific information and support.
- The problem could be related to the way the third-party provider integrates devices into its system.
To improve your product experience, we recommend using your Bosch Smart Home [+M] device in combination with the Bosch Smart Home controller.
If you pair your Bosch Smart Home [+M] devices via a third-party Matter controller, the available functions depend on the Matter version installed on the controller and on the third-party app. Here are some points you should note:
- The functions can vary depending on the Matter version and the third-party app.
- At present, many third-party apps often offer fewer functions than the Bosch Smart Home App.
Please note that functionality and compatibility are constantly being improved, so future updates may enable more functions for your [+M] devices in third-party apps. However, Bosch Smart Home has no influence on this.
To improve your product experience, we recommend using your Bosch Smart Home [+M] device in combination with the Bosch Smart Home controller.

Advantages of Bosch Smart Home [+M] devices
- Flexibility: [+M] devices offer you maximum flexibility for now and the future.
- Compatibility: Use both Zigbee and Thread, depending on your needs.
The [+M] symbol indicates that a Bosch Smart Home device is compatible with the Matter connectivity standard (via Thread). Here are the most important points you need to know:
- [+M] indicates that the Bosch Smart Home device supports the Matter standard.
- A Bosch Smart Home device with this symbol can be paired with another manufacturer's Matter controller via Thread technology.
- Despite the [+M] marking, the Bosch Smart Home device can still be paired with the Bosch Smart Home controller via Zigbee.
In summary:
If you see a Bosch Smart Home device with the [+M] symbol, it works with the Matter standard and you can connect it to a suitable (Thread-capable) controller.
At the same time, it remains compatible with the Bosch Smart Home controller via Zigbee. However, you have to decide whether you integrate the device into a Matter system or into a Bosch Smart Home system.
If you pair your Bosch Smart Home [+M] devices via a third-party Matter controller, the available functions depend on the Matter version installed on the controller and on the third-party app.
For Matter bindings, the respective provider of a Matter controller must implement the corresponding adjustments.
