If the [+M] device is operated via a Matter controller / Thread border router, the Thread wireless standard is used.
### Bosch Smart Home Controller: Communication Standards
The Bosch Smart Home controller currently uses the Zigbee wireless standard to communicate with Bosch Smart Home [+M] devices.
#### Important Information:
- **Not a Matter Controller**: The Bosch Smart Home controller does not support the Matter standard.
- **No Thread Communication**: The controller does not use the Thread standard.
- **Limitations with Third-Party Devices**: Matter or Thread devices from third-party manufacturers cannot be directly connected to the Bosch Smart Home controller.
This information helps you better understand the compatibility of your Bosch Smart Home controller with other devices.
Influence of Bosch Smart Home:
- Bosch Smart Home only provides the updates for the Bosch Smart Home [+M] devices.
- How and when the update arrives in your Matter environment is outside the scope of influence of Bosch Smart Home.
Troubleshooting steps
Restart Matter Controller:
- Restart your Matter Controller.
- Often the updates are reassigned to the connected end devices after a restart.
Reset device to factory settings:

With these simple steps, you can change the wireless standard of your device as needed. If the Bosch Smart Home [+M] device is already paired with a controller, it must first be reset to factory settings in order to switch the wireless standard.
The [+M] devices use the Thread wireless standard as default. But don't worry if you want to pair the [+M] device via Zigbee to a Bosch smart Home Controller:
- The switch from Thread to Zigbee happens automatically during pairing. So you don't need to worry about the change. Only Bluetooth needs to be enabled on your mobile device.
- An automatic switch in the other direction, i.e. from Zigbee to Thread, would not have been possible automatically.
In summary, using Thread as standard offers flexibility and convenience for the Matter system, without any disadvantages for the Bosch smart Home system.
Using 230V Thread devices:
- Bosch Smart Home [+M] devices that are directly connected to the 230V mains extend the respective wireless network with which they communicate.
- These devices act as repeaters and strengthen the Thread network (mesh).
- When you control the [+M] device with a Matter controller via Thread, the Thread range is extended by the Thread network (mesh).
How to extend the range of your Thread network
Position 230V devices strategically:
- Ensure that 230V devices are evenly distributed throughout your home to guarantee optimal network coverage.
Update the software:
- Make sure that both your Bosch Smart Home devices and the Matter controller are running the latest software version.
If your Bosch Smart Home [+M] devices have very high battery consumption, this may be due to the current limitations of Matter 1.1:
No "standby" mode in Matter 1.1:
- Matter 1.1 currently does not support a "standby" mode for devices integrated into a Matter Controller.
- This leads to higher battery consumption.
Influence of Bosch Smart Home:
- Bosch Smart Home has no influence on this circumstance.

You can switch between Thread and Zigbee at any time. However, please note that a device reset is required if it has already been paired to a controller.
### Benefits of [+M] Devices
- **Flexibility**: [+M] devices offer you maximum flexibility for now and the future.
- **Compatibility**: Use both Zigbee and Thread, depending on your needs.
The symbol [+M] is an indication of a device's compatibility with the Matter connection standard (via Thread). Here are the key points you need to know:
- [+M] indicates that the device supports the Matter standard.
- A device with this symbol can be paired with a Matter controller from another manufacturer via Thread technology.
- Despite the [+M] marking, the device can still be paired with the Bosch Smart Home Controller via Zigbee.
In summary, when you see a device with the [+M] symbol, it means that it works with the Matter standard and you can connect it with a compatible (Thread-enabled) controller. At the same time, compatibility with the Bosch Smart Home Controller via Zigbee remains. However, you must decide whether to integrate the device into a Matter system or into a Bosch Smart Home system.
If you want to operate your [+M] product in a Matter system, you need the following components:
Thread Border Router:The [+M] product communicates via Thread in Matter mode, not via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. A Thread Border Router is therefore required.
Matter controller:This controls the communication and management of Matter devices. Often the Matter controller is also a Thread Border Router, but this is not always the case. Check this in advance.
Use in the Bosch Smart Home System
If you want to use your [+M] product in the Bosch Smart Home System, you need the Bosch Smart Home controller.
